José María Giménez de Vargas, born on January 20, 1995, is a Uruguayan professional footballer who plays as a central defender for La Liga club Atlético Madrid and the Uruguay national team.

Giménez began his professional career with Danubio FC before moving to Spain to sign with Atlético Madrid ahead of the 2013–14 season. He quickly established himself as a solid, powerful, and fast-moving defender, winning the La Liga title in his debut season. He has since won several other major titles with the club, including the UEFA Europa League in 2017–18 and the UEFA Super Cup in 2018.

On the international stage, Giménez made his debut for the Uruguay senior team in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Colombia on September 10, 2013. He has since represented the nation at three FIFA World Cups and four editions of the Copa América. He scored his first international goal in a 1–0 friendly win against South Korea on September 8, 2014.

As of May 28, 2023, his club domestic league appearances and goals are as follows: Danubio (16 apps, 0 goals), Atlético Madrid (203 apps, 6 goals). His national team caps for Uruguay stand at 81 with 8 goals.
